Hear 'n Aid

ב- 1 לינואר 1986 שוחרר האלבום "Hear 'n Aid", אשר כלל שיתוף פעולה של 40 אומני הארד רוק ומטאל.



מדובר באלבום צדקה שנועד להוות תשובה של אומני המטאל למחוות שביצעו אומני בריטניה ובהמשך ארה"ב לשם סיוע לנפגעי הבצורת באפריקה.


הכל התחיל עם השיר "Do They Know It's Christmas?‎" שכתב Bob Geldof סולן ה- "Boomtown Rats" והלחין Midge Ure סולן "Ultravox" בשנת 1984, לצורך גיוס תרומות לסיוע לקורבנות הבצורת באתיופיה.


גלדוף ויור, חיברו את השיר לאחר שגלדוף ראה בערוץ BBC תוכנית דוקומנטרית על הבצורת הקשה שפקדה את אתיופיה. גלדוף קרא לאומנים בריטים נוספים להצטרף ליוזמת הצדקה והצליח להרכיב את הרכב ה- "Band Aid" שחבריו מנו את מיטב אומני בריטניה ואירלנד אשר ביצעו את השיר ששוחרר ב- 3 לדצמבר 1984 ושימש גם כשיר הנושא למופעי ה- "Live Aid" משנת 1985.


התגובה האמריקאית לא אחרה לבוא. מייקל ג'קסון וליונל ריצ'י כתבו את השיר "We Are the World", אשר שהוקלט על ידי ההרכב "USA for Africa", שהורכב ממיטב אומני ארה"ב וקנדה, למען נפגעי הבצורת באתיופיה. השיר שוחרר במרץ 1985, נמכר בלמעלה מ-20 מיליון עותקים ברחבי העולם והפך לשיר השביעי הנמכר ביותר בכל הזמנים, וכן השיר השלישי הנמכר ביותר בכל הזמנים בארצות הברית.


אומני המטאל לא יכלו להישאר אדישים לנוכח שתי המחוות הנ"ל. הזמר Ronnie James Dio חיבר יחד עם הבסיסט Jimmy Bain והגיטריסט Vivian Campbell, אשר היו אותה עת חלק מההרכב "Dio", את השיר "Stars" אשר גם הכנסותיו נתרמו לצורך הסיוע לנפגעי הבצורת באפריקה.


השיר הוקלט ב- 20-21 למאי 1985 על יד 40 אומני הארד רוק ומטאל מפורסמים, וביניהם: Vinny Appice, Neal Schon, Blackie Lawless, Ted Nugent, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tommy Aldridge, Rob Halford, Kevin DuBrow, Eric Bloom, Geoff Tate, Don Dokken, Vivian Campbell, Buck Dharma, Neal Schon, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith ועוד.


אומנים נוספים שלא הצליחו להגיע להקלטות, תרמו שירים לאלבום המחווה וביניהם: ""Accept", "Motörhead", "Rush", "Kiss ועוד.
