והפעם, מדוע "אנחנו לא אוהבים את ימי שני"...


ב- 29 לינואר 1979, יום שני בשבוע, קרה מקרה טראגי שהיווה את ההשראה לכתיבת השיר "I Don't Like Mondays" של להקת "The Boomtown Rats".


הסיפור העגום הוא כזה. Brenda Ann Spencer, תלמידת תיכון בת 16, קיבלה מאביה מתנה לחג המולד רובה. אותה ברנדה גרה מול בית הספר היסודי "קליבלנד" בסן דייגו, קליפורניה. ביום שני, 29 בינואר 1979, היא פותחת באש על מגרש המשחקים של בית הספר, עם הרובה שאביה קנה לה. היא הורגת שני מבוגרים (כולל מנהלת בית הספר) ופוצעת עוד תשעה ילדים.


המשטרה כיתרה את ביתה של ברנדה, אשר המתינה כשבע שעות לפני שהסגירה את עצמה. במהלך ההמתנה בביתה היא שוחחה עם כתב בטלפון. כשנשאלה למה היא עשתה את המעשה הנוראי ('Tell me why?' ), היא ענתה, "פשוט התחלתי לירות, זהו. פשוט עשיתי את זה בשביל הכיף. פשוט לא אוהבת את ימי שני ("I Don't Like Mondays"). פשוט עשיתי את זה כי זו דרך לעודד לי את היום, אף אחד לא אוהב ימי שני."


באותו זמן נמצא Bob Geldof מנהיג להקת "בומטאון רטס" יחד עם קלידן הלהקה Johnnie Fingers בריאיון בתחנת הרדיו WRAS באוניברסיטת ג'ורג'יה באטלנטה, ארה"ב. לתחנה הגיעה הודעת טלקס ובה נכתבה הכותרת המזעזעת על המעשה של ברנדה והתשובה שהעניקה לכתב.


גלדוף חזר לבית המלון בו התאכסן וכתב את השיר במקום. הגירסה הראשונה של השיר הייתה בסגנון רגאיי. כשגלדוף הגיע ללוס אנג'לס זמן קצר לאחר מכן, הוא הקליט גירסת דמו עם פסנתר ושירה. עד שהשיר נחשף לראשונה במהלך הופעה בלוך לומונד, סקוטלנד, השיר כבר עבר שינוי דרמטי והתקרב לגירסה המוכרת כיום.



מילות השיר והוידאו קליפ שצולם לו כוללים התייחסות מרומזת למאורעות אותו היום ולברנדה ספנסר.


הוריה של ברנדה ניסו למנוע את הוצאת הסינגל בארה"ב, אך ללא הצלחה. השיר נכלל באלבומה השלישי של הלהקה "The Fine Art of Surfacing" ששורר ביוני 1979 ומאוחר יותר שוחרר גם כסינגל, ב- 13 ליולי 1979.


השיר הפך בסופו של דבר ללהיט הגדול ביותר של הלהקה. הוא הגיע למקום הראשון ב- 32 ארצות שונות, אבל לא בארה"ב, ככל הנראה בשל העובדה שמדיניות הנשק בארה"ב היא נושא למחלוקת גדולה בקרב הציבור שם.


שנים מאוחר יותר גלדוף הודה שהוא מצטער שכתב את השיר, כי בכך הוא הפך את ברנדה למפורסמת.
